Ponamero Sundown - Stonerized (2009) @english version 0

okt11

Ponamero Sundown has been the apple of my eye for long; I noticed them through a song that still remains my favourite in the genre and is titled Espiritu Diablo. This song feels so much like a Mexican cuwboi riding into the sunset with a sombrero, that it’s difficult to believe these guys are chasing Finnish rocker chicks in the Swedish woods. This year, after four previous demos, their album Stonerized was released at Transubstans Records. Let’s see what this album reserves for a stoner fan.
the coverWell, it doesn’t include the above song, but instead, we have 12 Swedish Stoner Songs (yes, it has become a concept). I think that I don’t have to put down what I mean by that, the key words being: quality, precision, sound, melodies, groove. The sound is of a filthier kind of the Swedish ones, unfortunately a bit thin, but still, it has got a few moments that make it outstanding.
The first one comes right away with the opening song, Alcoholic Deathride, which makes the heart of every rocknrolla pounding. An anthem about drinking like hell and living like there’s no tomorrow, and trying to give it up: we already heard it but this time it’s so catchy that immediately won my heart – in fact, it already did on the Maximum Groove demo.

The next huge song on the record is Rotten Religion, a slow, gloomy, doomy blues. Every instrument brings really great mood, especially the bass-drum-vocal dropouts. At the end, there’s an exceptional stoner riff that could have been enough for a Part II alone.

The other songs, on the other hand, though not bad at all, are unfortunately not so outstanding. Any of them is perfect for driving and for showing a girlfriend what stoner is.
It’s worthwhile therefore to get hold of the record, let alone for those getting acquainted with the Swedish scene, the guys deserve it, being very cool otherwise. This is the type of music that has more effect on concert than on record, so I want a Ponamero Sundown gig in Hungary, now.
