God Damn - Old Days (2009) @english version 0

júl23

God Damn, a relatively young band formed in 2004 is one of those things that I just cannot pass by and say nothing of. They are one of the most promising southern metal band that I’ve been listening to lately since their album Old Days was published a few months ago. And we don’t even have to go overseas for them!

From their myspace profile we can barely learn anything of course (it looks nice though, hooray) and I couldn’t find an official website so the little I know of them is that they are a band of 5 French. Despite all these they place great emphasis on promotion; there’s a half minute sample of each song and 4 is even available in their full length, a good concert video, tons of pictures and some merchandise.

These good looking and charming fellows can be seen in the picture below.

Jerem - guitar, Bij - drums, Charly - bass, Renat - vocals, Pich - guitar

Old Days was released February 21 under NIP Down Records, and if it’s true - which I find difficult to believe - this was their very first album. The cover is also of high standard however, the content is more interesting.Old Days  Southern metal with some sludge elements in the footsteps of Down and Crowbar. I’ve always had a problems with music where the influences are so glaring (especially when the influence comes from bands that are the cornerstones of the genre) which is only topped when the vocals can be first heard. It’s not too difficult to guess from where did Renat adopt his singing style, in some places his voice sounds almost like Anselmo’s a thing which I still cannot say whether it was just simply nicked; nevertheless Renat’s voice is still too convincing so I cannot regard it as a bad thing. Great self-confidence and swing is what resonates from their songs, which thankfully last through the whole album with only one exception: Lies, where it slows down a little bit. With this we have reached the only weak point of the album. Although after listening to album several times, the tunes and notes all fit together, at first it was quite difficult to hear the difference between the songs (which is not at all bad in respect that all of them are equally good) even though every one of them has catchy melodies. Perhaps this is what falls into the category of “less is more”, nevertheless a few listenings can solve this problem. I’m curious what will become of this band as their debut album was an extremley outstanding work.

And for last but not least, watch the first track, Landing For My Pride live.
