Ponamero Sundown @english version 0
After Blind Dog let’s take a look at another Scandinavian stoner group who combines their music with hard rock. Ponamero Sundown was formed in 2005 by three enthusiastic Swedish lads whose names are: Nick Engwall (vocals), Peter Eklund (drum) and Anders Martinsgård (guitar). I’d like to drool out a few statements on their album (which is available via their official website) for those who are even too lazy to download free stuff. Although it is strongly advised that you do download the album.
The three LPs from 2006 make up a decent album and their other album from 2007 only doubles the fun! The first LP, Maximum Groove is probably the most raw of them all, the sounding is quite mushy. Nevertheless, there is no way you can dislike anything that starts with a track titled Alcoholic Deathride. The third track takes back from the speed of the LP and serves as a perfect closure to it. After the immortal machine we find ourselves in front of the spirit of the devil which I like so much that I even put it in one of my podcasts; a real ballad this is a parable of the forked-tailed. The third LP, Highfuelled Leftovers takes its momentum and starts faster with the first song just so that it can accelerate with the second one. These are those kind of songs that are being listened to by nerds when playing a racing game or on an endless highway by those who drive their cars real fast under the setting sun.
Heavy Rock is the title of their full length album of 2007 which feels more collected containing maybe a tad more well written written songs. One can feel it that the album is more cleaner and technical regarding the instruments, a typical quality of Swedish bands, and the vocals feel more varied than before. Improvement can be heard from these gentlemen, that is for sure which foreshadows this article’s ending, namely that we very much await their new album (June, 2009). Returning back to Heavy Rock it is worth mentioning that if someone is looking for a new and original breakthrough of a milestone, than that person will surely be disappointed, the album would fail to meet such high expectations, nevertheless it is still an extremley likeable musical feast. Good lyrics, melodies well thought with precision; featuring tracks from their previous LPs that fit the style is what one may find on Heavy Rock. This album convinced me that the trio would most definitely be staggering on stage. Practically, Ponamero Sundown was born to be performing in clubs regarding their style and technique. Whenever during the day you miss the feeling of an evening in your local pub, the smoke, the friends and everything that goes with it, do not hesitate to put in Ponamero Sundown on such occasion.
The bands first true album Stonerized is scheduled to be released in June by Transurban Records and they are also planning a shorter European tour but they are currently looking for a bass player. [Since then, according to their official site they found that in Oliver, and the release of their album is imminent - Thoma]
