According to the band’s official biography, in 1990 they moved from Pennsylvania to San Francisco in order to resurrect the true-metal scene. From that we already know that we are not dealing with youngsters, the music that was supposed to achieve the great purpose is non other than the prime-doom, following in the steps of Saint Vitus, Obsessed, Trouble, Candlemass and of course Black Sabbath adding a lot of metal feeling to it as well.

Slough Feg - Ape Uprising
Singer Mike Scalzi’s voice makes me think of master Wino’s, slower themes are as if played by Saint Vitus, whereas faster stuff are like a metal warrior’s riding to which I cannot draw a good parallel.
One of my favourite song is the very first, funny titled track, The Hunchback of the Notre Doom a classical, extremely slow doom anthem with sentimental vocals, melodic twin solo (a tool which will be used throughout the whole album suiting the models), a very simple structure and riffs just the way we like the genre.
My other favourite is the song called Shakedown at the 6, which resembles the faster tracks of Trouble, with memorable vocals and a heavy, kick arse riff. Just as before, this is not a too complex song – it doesn’t need to be – the well used metal and doom clichés make the song worthwile to listen to.
It is a quite refreshening to listen to such and album, it is by no means a revolutionary record but a gem. Even though classical metal is not my cup of tea there will be a few times when I will be listening to this album.
