The band Fiktív (formed in 2004 at Szolnok) follows the traditions of the Scandinavian stoner which is not typical in Hungary. According to them their main influence is Dozer which is fair and square. The trio (Gyula Rácz – guitar/vocals, Márton Imre – bass, Péter Molnár – drums) recorded their promising EP; titled Szellemkép in 2008. There’s a lot of potential in these guys.

The band delivers the style of the Northern stoner well, being not as dirty or blues like as its American counterpart but a kind of hard-rocky, melodic way and not like the simple (in a good sense of course) three by four grooves and riffs; more over, clean guitars can be heard quite a few times! The structures of the songs are not mind blowing complex, but they are well written enough to be not boring.
One of my favourite songs is Vérmentes Aktus, in which a typical stoner theme is varying with a kick arse, smooth doom riff and a pinch of psychedelic impression beside a short instrumental section. What I cannot say I like is the singing which reminds me of Isten Háta Mögött. Gyula’s voice is good, aside from the fact that I can’t stand Palika’s voice; it does not go really well with the music. The instrumental part of the song is fucking a, and the singing is the kind when you can sing anything on anything.
One possible exception is my absolute favourite track titled Elégtlen, where the vocals are more rock’n’roll like with some psychedelic effects, it has the stoner type of hypnotic feeling to it which goes well with the true and essential stoner riff and the rhythm that builds on the tams.

All in all this is good material here; the band’s strengths (true stoner themes, kick arse instrumental parts) remind us of the classical Kyuss, Spiritual Beggars, Dozer and the less known Swedish bands like Abramis Brama, Blind Dog, Truckfighters. Beside that it is also a respectable thing that they follow the undeservedly neglected sub-genre of Scandinavian stoner. The sounding of the EP is not the best, a bit dry and raw but it might the concept behind it. It would really help the band if the vocals to a more direct and brutish turn to a more rock’n’roll tone.
Since the recording of the EP the band has written new songs which are planned to be recorded during the summer. They reached sixth place on the Borosdi talent scout, they have gigs mostly outside Budapest.
